What to write when you forgot a birthday
There are two kinds of forgetting: you remembered late, or you were reminded by someone else. The second one is harder to write, because they already know. In both cases the move is the same — say it once, don’t build a case for yourself, and then be warm. People forgive the forgetting far more easily than they forgive a card that is mostly about your feelings.
Warm
Friendly, unfussy, safe with almost anybody.
- I forgot, and I’m glad to have remembered. Happy birthday.
- No excuse, just a late and genuine happy birthday.
- I’m late. You’re lovely. Happy birthday.
- This arrives after the day and before I forget again. Happy birthday.
- Caught up with myself and came straight here. Happy birthday.
Funny
A joke with affection behind it. Read the room first.
- I have been informed of my error and am taking it very seriously.
- In my defence, I remembered your birthday vividly. Just not on it.
- I’d like to blame a calendar. I am the calendar.
- Treat this as a second birthday. Twice the cake, half the organisation.
- Nobody tell me when it is next year. Let’s keep the tradition.
Heartfelt
For the people you would actually say this to out loud.
- I forgot the date and I haven’t forgotten you for a moment.
- I’m sorry. You deserve to be remembered on the day, and I want to be someone who does.
- Being late doesn’t change what I’d have said: I’m lucky to know you.
- I missed it, and I didn’t want to let it pass without saying how much you matter to me.
- The day got away from me. You never have.
Simple
When short is the right answer, and it often is.
- I forgot. I’m sorry. Happy birthday.
- Late and sincere: happy birthday.
- I missed the day — happy birthday anyway.
- Sorry I forgot. Hope it was a good one.
- Happy birthday, belatedly and genuinely.
What to avoid
- Don’t say “I’m the worst” — it asks them to reassure you, which is the opposite of a card.
- Don’t list what you were doing instead. Nobody has ever felt better for hearing it.
- Don’t send money or a gift card as the apology. Write the thing first; the gift can follow.
- Don’t make it a joke if they were actually hurt. Read the room before you reach for a punchline.
