What to avoid

• Don’t joke about their age if the relationship is new. It is a joke for people who have earned it.
• Don’t use a joke you found online word for word. They have read it too.
• Don’t end on the punchline. One warm sentence after it is what turns a gag into a card.
• Don’t make the joke about something they are sensitive about — work, weight, being single. Funny is not a defence.
