Last-minute birthday card: what to write
A short card written today beats a long one written next week. The trick to not sounding rushed is to say one specific thing — a memory, a trait, a hope for the year — rather than three general ones. One true sentence reads as considered. Three vague ones read as filler.
Warm
Friendly, unfussy, safe with almost anybody.
- Happy birthday. You’re one of my favourite people and I hope today says so.
- Wishing you a day that feels like you — unhurried and full of good company.
- Happy birthday. Here’s to another year of you being exactly this.
- Hope today is slow in the best way. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday — and thank you for a year of being you.
Funny
A joke with affection behind it. Read the room first.
- Written at speed, meant at length. Happy birthday.
- This card was assembled in under a minute. The sentiment took years.
- Happy birthday. I have no gift, only excellent taste in friends.
- Quick card, long-standing admiration. Happy birthday.
- Rushed, yes. Insincere, never. Happy birthday.
Heartfelt
For the people you would actually say this to out loud.
- Happy birthday. I don’t say it often enough, so: I’m glad you’re here.
- Another year of you is good news for everyone who knows you.
- Happy birthday. You make things easier just by being in them.
- Thinking about how lucky I am to know you. Happy birthday.
- Happy birthday — may this year be gentler than the last.
Simple
When short is the right answer, and it often is.
- Happy birthday!
- Happy birthday — have a brilliant day.
- Many happy returns.
- Happy birthday. Enjoy every bit of it.
- Happy birthday, with love.
What to avoid
- Don’t apologise for the card being short. Nobody noticed until you said so.
- Don’t use their full name. It makes a quick card read as a form letter.
- Don’t write “hope you have a great day” and stop. One specific line about them is worth ten general ones.
- Don’t send it without checking the name. It is the one typo that undoes everything else.
