Belated birthday card: what to write
A late card is still a card, and almost nobody minds as much as you think they do. The one thing that does land badly is a long apology — it makes the reader do the work of forgiving you before they get to the nice part. Name it in a sentence, then spend the rest of the card on them.
Warm
Friendly, unfussy, safe with almost anybody.
- This is late and you are not. Happy birthday.
- Late card, same love. I hope the day was a good one.
- A few days behind, and thinking of you all the same. Happy birthday.
- Your birthday came and went and I didn’t. Happy birthday, properly.
- Better late than never, and better you than most. Happy birthday.
Funny
A joke with affection behind it. Read the room first.
- I’d say the card got lost in the post, but you know I sent it from my phone.
- Consider this a birthday extension. You’re welcome.
- I didn’t forget. I was simply pacing your celebrations across the month.
- Officially the last person to wish you happy birthday. Unofficially, the most sincere.
- Your birthday was last week. My calendar and I are no longer speaking.
Heartfelt
For the people you would actually say this to out loud.
- I’m sorry this is late. I’m not sorry about how glad I am you were born.
- The date slipped past me. You never do.
- Late, but every word of it meant: I hope this year is kind to you.
- I missed the day. I’d hate to miss telling you what you mean to me.
- A year older, and still one of the best people I know. Happy birthday.
Simple
When short is the right answer, and it often is.
- Happy belated birthday.
- Late, but meant. Happy birthday.
- Sorry this is late — happy birthday.
- Happy birthday, a few days late.
- Belated happy birthday. Hope it was a good one.
What to avoid
- Don’t spend three sentences apologising. One is plenty, and the rest of the card should be about them.
- Don’t explain why you were busy. It reads as “you were not a priority”, however true the reason.
- Don’t promise to be better next year unless you have actually set a reminder.
- Don’t open with “I know this is late” twice — once at the top and again at the bottom is the most common version of this card.
